How to Design a Flyer That Actually Gets Read (And Not Binned)

Flyers Aren’t Dead. Bad Design Is.

Every year, businesses write off print marketing as old news. And every year, a well-designed flyer lands on the right doormat, catches the right eye, and converts a cold prospect into a paying customer. The problem was never print. The problem was uninspiring design, muddled messaging, and a total lack of strategy.

If your flyers have been disappearing into recycling bins without a second glance, this one’s for you. Here are our six tried-and-tested tips for designing a flyer that actually earns its place in the world.

1. Know Your Audience Before You Pick Up a Pen

Before you think about colours, fonts, or layout, ask yourself: who is this for? A flyer promoting a kids’ holiday club looks and feels completely different to one advertising a financial advisory service. Your audience shapes everything, from the language you use to the images you choose to the size of the flyer itself.

Get specific. Where will your audience be when they pick this up? What do they care about? What problem are they trying to solve? When you design with a real person in mind, the result is always more compelling.

2. Lead With the Benefit, Not the Business

This is one of the most common mistakes we see. A flyer that opens with a company logo and a list of services is a flyer that gets skimmed and binned. People aren’t interested in what you do, they’re interested in what you can do for them.

Flip your thinking. Instead of “ABC Cleaning Services, Est. 2005”, try “Come home to a spotless house, every time.” Lead with the transformation, the result, the feeling. Make the reader think: yes, that’s exactly what I need. Then tell them who you are.

3. One Flyer, One Call to Action

A flyer that asks people to visit your website, call you, follow you on Instagram, book online, and pick up a voucher is a flyer that gets nothing done. When you give people too many choices, they make none.

Pick one action you want the reader to take, and make it unmissable. Whether it’s “Call us today”, “Scan here to book”, or “Bring this in for 10% off”, every design decision should point towards that single goal. Keep it simple. Keep it clear.

4. Get Your Hierarchy Right

Visual hierarchy is the secret weapon of great print design. It’s the art of guiding the reader’s eye through your flyer in the right order, from the headline that hooks them, to the details that inform them, to the call to action that converts them.

Think of it in three layers:

The Hook , your headline or key visual. Big, bold, impossible to miss. This earns you the next two seconds of attention.

The Support , a sentence or two of supporting copy. What’s the offer? Why should they care? Keep it punchy.

The Close , your call to action. Clear contact details, a QR code, a website, a phone number. Make it easy to act.

If someone can absorb your flyer’s core message in five seconds, you’ve nailed the hierarchy.

5. Invest in a Quality Print Finish

Design gets people to read it. Print quality makes them keep it.

There’s a noticeable difference between a flyer printed at home and one produced on quality stock with a professional finish. Gloss laminate makes colours pop. Silk finish feels premium in the hand. Spot UV adds a tactile detail that people notice. These touches communicate something important: this business takes pride in what they do.

Quality print doesn’t have to mean expensive print. At DogFish Design, we offer flyer design and print from as few as 10 copies right up to 100,000, with competitive pricing and quick turnaround times. Whether you need a handful of samples or a full-scale distribution run, we can accommodate it.

6. Connect Your Flyer to Your Digital Strategy

Print and digital work beautifully together when you let them. A QR code on your flyer can send people straight to a landing page, an offer, a booking form, or a video. A unique promo code tells you exactly how many customers came from that print run. A dedicated phone number tracks enquiries.

This is how you measure print ROI, and it’s how you make your flyer part of a bigger, smarter campaign rather than a standalone piece that disappears into the ether.

If you’re running a seasonal promotion, an event, or a local campaign, a well-designed flyer paired with social media activity and email can dramatically increase your reach and response rate.

The Bottom Line

A flyer done well is one of the most cost-effective marketing tools available to a small business. It puts your brand directly into someone’s hands. It works offline, in the real world, in places a digital ad can never reach.

But a flyer done badly? That’s a waste of budget, paper, and opportunity.

If you want print that makes an impression, we’d love to help. Get in touch with the team at DogFish Design, and let’s create something worth keeping.
